Gauteng is a northern province of South Africa, with most of its territory defined by 2 of the nation's largest cities. Pretoria is the de facto national capital, with the Voortrekker Monument to 19th-century Dutch residents and Kruger House, home of 19th-century president Paul Kruger. These include the groundbreaking and immersive Apartheid Museum on Northern Parkway, the politically loaded site of Constitution Hill, and the 45,000-hectare or so UNESCO area called ‘Cradle of Humankind’ to the city’s west, where 3.5 million year-old fossils have pushed our understanding of humankind’s ancestry.
For the urban addict, there’s plenty of action and goings-on in Jo’burg that are guaranteed to impress; from walking the bustling streets of the downtown CBD to people watching in the vast green parks, or simply sampling the local character with a jaunt on one of the city’s legendary nightlife strips.

​

Limpopo is a South African province bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It's known for bushveld and wildlife reserves, including part of Kruger National Park. West of the Kruger are the craggy Blouberg mountains and Makgabeng Plateau with ancient rock art. Near the provincial capital Polokwane, the Arend Dieperink Museum and fossil-rich caves of Makapansgat explore history dating back to early hominids.

West of Polokwane, Vaalwater town offers craft shops and outdoor activities amid the rocky mountains and bushman paintings of the Waterberg Biosphere. South lie Nylsvley Nature Reserve's bird-filled wetlands and Bela-Bela's hot springs. By the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, Mapungubwe National Park is characterised by glowing sandstone hills, big game and a lost African kingdom. Limpopo's highest peak, Iron Crown, towers over the misty Magoebaskloof mountains. Just east, in the lush surroundings of Tzaneen town, stands the massive Sunland Baobab tree with a pub in its hollow trunk.

South African province

North West is an inland South African province that borders Botswana. Its landscape is defined by mountains in the northeast and bushveld scattered with trees and shrubs. The province is home to Sun City, an upscale resort with hotels, a casino, and a water park with a massive wave pool. Nearby is Pilanesberg National Park, with an extinct volcano and more than 7,000 animals, including lions and elephants.

Southeast of the park is the aerial Harties Cableway, offering panoramic views of the mountains and Hartbeespoort dam. To the northwest is Madikwe Game Reserve, home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) and several luxury lodges. The Vredefort Dome, which extends into the Free State, is a mark created by an ancient meteor impact. The surrounding area hosts hot-air ballooning, white-water rafting and hiking excursions. At the Taung Heritage Site, visitors can tour the limestone quarry where a famous hominid skull was found in 1924 and picnic next to a spring at the Blue Pools.

Mpumalanga (Zulu name for "the place where the sun rises") is a province in eastern South Africa, bordering the nations of Swaziland and Mozambique. It embraces the southern half of Kruger National Park, a huge nature reserve with abundant wildlife including big game. The province's iconic Blyde River Canyon, among the world’s largest, is known as a green canyon because of its subtropical foliage.

The province’s varied landscape spans mountains, valleys and lowlands, with panoramic passes, rivers, caves, waterfalls and forests. It’s popular for outdoor activities from bird-watching, cycling, horseback-riding and fishing to hiking, rock climbing and white-water rafting. Some 20,000 flamingos reside within its Lake District. The dramatic Sudwala Caves were formed about 240 million years ago. Sitting where the Crocodile and Nels rivers converge, sprawling Lowveld National Botanical Garden is home to hundreds of tropical plant species. Mpumalanga’s towns are steeped in the history of the gold rush era of the 1870s.
